Dental Implants

What is a Dental Implant ?

Implants are an excellent and permanent solution for replacing missing teeth, in a natural way, without having to shave down the neighboring teeth. Dental implants are advantageous because of their appearance and that they are not removable like dentures.

What is it like to get implants at our office ?

We at NYC dental Pro make sure that your implant journey is completely painless and comfortable. The full procedure is performed in a series over several months.

After a tooth has been removed, and the gum, bone and surrounding tissue has healed, an implant can be placed to begin the replacement process. The implant is essentially a screw, which is drilled beneath the gum, into the bone as the support for the remainder of the implant parts. After the implant placement, the gum, bone and supporting tissue needs to heal and regrow around the implant. Once the healing process is complete, an impression of the implant area is taken.

This model is sent out to a dental laboratory and is worked on by the dental laboratory technicians. After a few days, the permanent implant crown returns to the office and is cemented and attached via another piece called an abutment, completing the treatment for that tooth.

Dental Crowns

When a cavity has become too enlarged, a regular composite filling may not suffice to completely seal the tooth and treat the symptomatic effects of the tooth being exposed. Thus, dentists use crowns to completely treat the tooth.

Crowns can be done after root canal treatment, or without root canal therapy; depending on the condition of the tooth and the decay sustained. A cracked tooth, large previous restorations, an esthetic upgrade are some other indications. Upon radiographic diagnosis, our dentist at NYC dental Pro will decide the best course of treatment for the tooth.

It all starts with your initial visit to NYC Dental Pro. Here our dentists will discuss your concerns, inform and educate you about the biological need for crown(s) and perform evaluation of the tooth/ teeth that requires it. The patient will be numbed, and the cavity will be cleaned out fully to ensure that all decay is removed from the tooth. The tooth is prepared, shaped and measured, and then an impression of that tooth is taken. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which will fabricate the permanent crown. The day of the crown preparation and impression, the patient leaves with a temporary crown, while the model is worked on by the dental laboratory technicians. After a few days, the permanent zirconia and porcelain crown returns to the office. The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented, completing the treatment for that tooth.

Veneers

A veneer is very similar to a crown, in the functions of esthetics and is most often done to patients’ front teeth. Veneers are essentially shells of ceramic on the surface of the teeth to cover worn out or eroded enamel, uneven teeth and spacing and chips or cracks in the structure of the teeth.

Veneers are most commonly made of porcelain. The process is very similar to a crown preparation. Here at NYC Dental Pro, your dentist will discuss your concerns and perform evaluation of the tooth/ teeth that needs veneer(s). The patient will be numbed, and the tooth is measured and shaped and an impression is taken. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which will fabricate the permanent veneer. The day of the veneer preparation and impression, the patient leaves with a temporary veneer, while the model is worked on by the dental laboratory technicians. After a few days, the permanent porcelain veneer returns to the office. The temporary veneer is removed and the permanent veneer is cemented, completing the treatment for that tooth.

Bridges

A bridge is a fixed prosthetic device that can be done to cap the teeth and to bridge a gap that is present due to missing teeth. This is not a removable appliance; instead it is cemented onto existing teeth and can only be removed by a dental professional.

Bridges are recommended if one or more teeth are missing, and are done to replace the empty space, where the teeth once were. In addition, implant bridges can also be done to replace missing teeth and can also have implants built into them, as well. The appliance attaches to the teeth on both ends and are made of crown like material to mimic the natural teeth that are now missing.

Failure to replace the missing teeth can cause the remaining teeth to shift into the empty space, creating malocclusion and a bad bite, and may lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint complications.

At NYC dental pro we take utmost care for our patients to have a pleasurable experience during the entire process. To begin with, the patient will be numbed, and the bridge area is prepared, shaped and measured, and then an impression of that area is taken. The existing teeth are shaped and fitted, while the dentist measures and takes the impression of the open area. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which will fabricate the permanent bridge. The day of the bride preparation and impression, the patient leaves with a temporary bridge, while the model is worked on by the dental laboratory technicians. After a few days, the permanent zirconia and porcelain bridge returns to the office. The temporary bridge is removed and the permanent bridge is cemented, completing the treatment for that tooth.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitenings are done when stains and discoloration are present on the surface of the teeth. It is a cosmetic treatment that is done to create and correct color changes in the teeth.

Consuming food or beverages with heavy artificial colors, natural food colors like turmeric, drinking excessive black coffee, red wine, lack of oral hygiene, trauma, smoking and natural aging are some reasons why teeth may stain overtime.

The first step to finding out if a whitening is right for you, is to schedule an appointment with our dentists to evaluate the strength of your teeth and gum condition. A dental screening and evaluation is essential before starting your whitening.

What are the different ways to perform teeth whitening?

The use of peroxide gel in high concentrations is efficient in changing the shade of your teeth by brightening them. The gums are protected from being bleached, and the gel is placed on the teeth surfaces carefully and in fixed time intervals. In no time at all, your smile can be bright and white!

These take home kits are excellent options for right before a party or a performance. They are usually a week long treatment of pre-filled trays done from the comfort of your own home. These use hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient, in a lower dose than in-office whitenings.

You can find teeth whitening products such as whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes and whitening strips at your local pharmacy!
